19-Inch Server Racks for Edge Computing Solutions

Edge computing is the counterpart to cloud computing: instead of sending data to a remote data center, processing happens decentrally, right where the data is generated. This enables real-time data processing and keeps sensitive data closer to its source — both increasingly important as connected machines, sensors, and IoT devices generate growing volumes of time-critical data outside traditional data centers.

Because these racks are often deployed outside a controlled server room, they're built to withstand a wide range of potential hazards. Each cabinet features a fire-resistant, smoke-tight housing with a 90-minute fire-resistance rating as standard — the sealed doors prevent smoke from entering the cabinet in the event of a fire. For additional protection, an integrated fire-extinguishing system can be added on request.

Lehmann IT offers several 19-inch edge computing cabinet models, differing primarily in available cooling capacity, so the right configuration can be matched to the specific power and thermal demands of your edge deployment.

What Is Edge Computing and Why Does It Matter?

Edge computing means processing data directly where it's created, instead of first sending it to a centralized data center or the cloud. In connected production environments, IoT applications, and industrial automation, the volume of data generated today is often too large — and too time-sensitive — for cloud-only processing to keep up. Every additional millisecond of latency can matter for time-critical processes such as robotics control, image-based quality inspection, or safety-relevant monitoring systems. Edge data centers solve this by placing compute power decentrally, right at the source.

Lehmann IT's Edge Computing CoolRacks in Detail

Lehmann IT's edge computing server cabinets are designed as self-contained IT infrastructure units, manufactured entirely in Germany. Every cabinet has a fire-resistant, smoke-tight housing rated for 90 minutes of fire resistance, with an optional integrated fire-extinguishing system for additional protection where required. An integrated rack climate control unit keeps operating temperatures stable independent of the surrounding room — important, since edge deployments are often located outside conventionally cooled server rooms, for example directly on a factory floor. A rack monitoring Ethernet box allows remote monitoring of cabinet status — temperature, access, operating state — while a UPS rated at 5,000 to 10,000 watts bridges power outages to protect running processes from data loss, and an automatic door opener enables fast access in an emergency.

Where Edge Computing Server Cabinets Are Used

Manufacturing and Industry 4.0: controlling connected machines and robots, real-time image processing for quality control, evaluating sensor data directly on the production line.
Logistics and warehousing: real-time inventory tracking, controlling automated conveyor systems, processing data at decentralized sites without continuous cloud connectivity.
Telecommunications and network infrastructure: local data processing at network nodes, supporting latency-critical 5G and IoT applications.
Retail and branch operations: decentralized processing of point-of-sale data, on-site video and security analytics without dependence on a constant internet connection.

Key Advantages at a Glance

Low latency: data processed right at the source instead of routed through a remote cloud.
Fully self-contained: integrated climate control, power backup, and fire protection make the cabinet independent of the surrounding room's infrastructure.
Made in Germany: manufacturing, quality control, and support from Germany.
Modular and flexible: configurable to the specific requirements of each deployment site, from server capacity to safety equipment.
