CoolRow In-Row DX & CW – Precision Cooling Right at the Rack

 

As rack power density rises with AI and GPU workloads, heat output becomes concentrated at individual racks rather than spread evenly across the room. Traditional room-level air conditioning often responds too slowly or too inefficiently to this — the result is localized heat buildup exactly where the hardware is most sensitive.

CoolRow In-Row units bring cooling directly to the rack instead of the whole room, addressing the problem at its source. Two variants are available:

DX (Direct-Expansion): These units draw warm exhaust air directly from the rear of the server racks, cool it, and return fresh air to the front. With 12 to 25 kW of cooling capacity and a compact footprint (300×1000×2000 mm), they suit space-constrained environments particularly well.

CW (Chilled-Water): The water-cooled variants deliver 20 to 60 kW of capacity and are designed for modular data center deployments. They combine smart controls, EC fans, and reliable condensate pumps for effective heat removal.

Both variants share key advantages: a compact design for placement directly between server rows without raised-floor cooling, quiet and efficient EC fan technology with low airflow resistance, and a modular, plug-and-play design that fits seamlessly into hot-aisle/cold-aisle configurations.

Why Rack-Level Cooling Matters as Density Rises

The more compute power is packed into the same footprint, the more concentrated the resulting heat becomes at individual racks. Centralized room cooling isn't built for this kind of localized load — it cools the room evenly while the actual heat is generated at a handful of high-load racks. The result is inefficient cooling paths, higher energy costs, and in the worst case, heat buildup that threatens hardware reliability.

In-Row Cooling as a Targeted Solution

CoolRow In-Row systems address this directly: instead of cooling the room, cooling capacity is placed right between the server rows, exactly where the heat is generated. This drastically shortens cooling paths, reduces energy use per kilowatt removed, and makes cooling capacity precisely scalable — additional racks can be supported by adding more in-row units, without redesigning the entire room's cooling system.

DX vs. CW

The DX variant (Direct-Expansion) operates independently of a central chilled-water system, making it suitable for environments without existing chilled-water infrastructure — compact (300×1000×2000 mm) with 12 to 25 kW of cooling capacity per unit. The CW variant (Chilled-Water) uses a central chilled-water system and delivers significantly more capacity at 20 to 60 kW per unit — suited to modular data centers built around an existing or planned chilled-water network.
